In order to protect the consumers from exploitation and to save them from adulterated and
substandard goods and deficient services the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was enacted. The new
Consumer Protection Act, 2019 has recently replaced the three decade old Consumer Protection Act,
1986.

The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 aims to provide better protection to the interests of consumers,
and for achieving the said purpose, seeks to establish a central regulator known as the Central
Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) that will address issues related to consumer rights, unfair
trade practices, misleading advertisements and impose penalties for selling faulty and fake
products.
